I've corrected this for the time being and will update the article with some more accurate information. Actually, with your advice most of this article is rendered useless.

Re: How To Treat An Injured Cyclist

Hi, I'm an emergency medicine doctor in New Zealand and also a cyclist who has had my share of bike vs cars.
If someone has had a crash and can't get up then DO NOT move them. To make the area safe put people up the road diverting traffic.
If the injured cyclist has a broken neck but an intact spinal cord, you may cause them to because tetraplegic by moving them.
Laura

Re: How To Treat An Injured Cyclist

we've been discussing this very topic recently as a result of a decent crash amongst our team. With regards to the ICE number in the phone (which is a great idea), you also need some other backup as in our case, the mobile phone was smashed during the crash. I've seen some of the PRO's on twitter shilling a device in the states called a RoadID, basically like one of those medical braceletts kids used to have in primary school. It has your emergency contact details and can also have other emegergency info like blood type and alergies. Just recieved mine in the mail. might be worth checking out as a backup.

Re: How To Treat An Injured Cyclist

Is it a good idea to move an injured person, considering they may have sustained damage to their spine?

Re: How To Treat An Injured Cyclist

Hey Thanks buddy you have mentioned great points on how to take care of injured cyclist. If everyone paid attention to what they were doing and showed a little courtesy, people wouldn't be injured or even die on our roads nearly as often.

Re: How To Treat An Injured Cyclist

Thanks Jo. Hopefully someone reading this will know what to do the next time the situation arises. Stuff like this is always put on the backburner and writen off as something you'll never need to know.

Also having an ICE number put into your phone in case you're the victim is a good idea. Paramedics are trained to look for this number in your mobile phone

http://cyclingtipsblog.com/...

Re: How To Treat An Injured Cyclist

Legs up to her ears! Getting the driver's details is extremely important. Also get a tetanus shot if there are any cuts. Lots of disease in those dirty roads

Re: How To Treat An Injured Cyclist

Hell yeah, forget about the bike. Rider first, bike second.

Once you get the rider stable (as above), or if they are relatively ok, help with getting the details of the car/driver. If they aren't able to, t
ake a mobile phone cam shot of the car and accident corner. The rider may need it later for evidence.

I got hit by a car illegally turning last year and, while I was able to get up and walk to the footpath with my bike, the idiot commuter cyclist that pulled up didn't bother getting off his bike and all he suggested was "don't get angry about it". I think in a situation like that you're entitled to be 'angry about it' and in the event of another cyclist being in trouble, I'd hope I could be of more use to someone than that.
