Finding The Right Saddle
Perhaps Wendy Hargraves may take the opportunity to share with Magda&Julia.
I can see a future of Friday morning rides coming up for those who have repented their sins!
This is one of the comments I wrote... and I'd like to share with you all too.
My message to cyclists (in response to an insulting response):
If we want cyclists to be embraced by our community instead of being hunted targets (only cyclists know that it's not a 'joke' when we continue to get run off the road - often with vengeful attacks), we must be refrain from verbal backlashes (as tempting that it may be). Only when our community loves us that they will take care of us, look out for us, be aware of us, protect us and be proud of us. In order to have our community love us, we must not be boastful or insulting - making such retorts is a step in the wrong direction.
My message to non-cyclists:
If we want more Australians to become world cycling champions like Cadel Evans, then we need to support them and cheer them on - not belittle them and make 'jokes' about running them off the road.
Australia ought to be proud that we have a WORLD CHAMPION CYCLIST - that's right - the best cyclist in the world is AUSTRALIAN!!!! ... so let's celebrate and take care of our cyclists - let's celebrate their passion and let's be inspired to be more like them. Cadel didn't get to where he is by training in the gym.
Anyway, the reaction from people posting comments on there supporting Magda & Julia is that it was merely humour. There is a obvious disconnect from what was really being said and reality. Hey, I've got a very robust sense of humour & it helps when coping with daily life, but I think Julia's comments should be questioned as well. She's the one who actually took the segment elsewhere. Badly.
Is this history repeating itself?
Jokes people..
I can see how us cyclist can get angry, but it is a joke. Probably taken a bit far but hey, it's just comedy.
"If we want cyclists to be embraced by our community instead of being hunted targets (only cyclists know that it’s not a ‘joke’ when we continue to get run off the road – often with vengeful attacks), we must be refrain from verbal backlashes (as tempting that it may be). If you look at other major centres of activity, (MCG, Bondai, etc) the councils and police have measures in place to deal with the large crowds - the mobs, and other associated logistical and behavioural problems which can occour. Whenever there is a large group of people, individuals loose their sense of responsibility for their actions, and find justification for what they do based on the fact that "everyone is doing it". At the G, this can result in traffic, noisy crowds, violence etc. Similar things at Bondai. These are massive centres in their respecive sub-cultures, and as such, the police and councils have realised that they need special measure in place to deal with the associated problems.
The councils and police around beach road have not recognised the area as the cycling mecca it has become. They have identified there is a cycling 'problem' but have done little to deal with it. Residents don't want to give up their parking, drivers don't want to give up their lanes, and cyclists don't want to be encumbered on their training rides. At this stalemate, an indipendent review really needs to step in to make a decision.
There is no denying that on Beach road, a 'mob' of cyclists can easily end up 4-5 abreast, running lights, because they feel empowered by being in a big bunch. I like to think that those groups are in the minority. I guarantee when an individual goes into another lane of traffic just so he/she can pass riders who are already 4 abreast, they know what they are doing is wrong, but as there are 'no reprocussions' for their actions, then why should they be slowed down. (very similar feeling to the frustration cars feel when they have to slow down for cyclists) There is definitely room for more legal reprocussions for inapropriate rides, as part of a larger solution to the problem of traffic flow.
Don't get me worng, I ride on Beach road as well and generally behave myself. I am occassionally guilty of fanging it when i really shouldn't, but am not so one sided as to think that behaviour might not be part of the problem. We SHOULD keep our vioces down at the cafe at 'stoopid oclock' in the morning, we SHOULD be warry of how much noise our cleats and hubs make in front of houses, and we certainly SHOULD obay traffic rulles. Only then can we take the moral high ground.
My heart goes out to all those cyclists, and pedestrians who have been injured or lost their lives on Beach road, and pray that someone with some power steps in for positive change. Untill then, I empathise for the Magdas in the world, but hope they think twice before they open their massive, foul, cake holes on national tv.
...wait for it....
Cyclists and motorised vehicles should NOT share beach road. In fact it should be shut down to motorists (local traffic only) on weekends between 6-11am.
In the interim, there should also be police motorcycles patrolling beach road during these hours to deter all those hooligans who enjoy hanging out car windows and shouting profanities at peaceful bunches. And YES, they should also book any cyclists who go through red lights and hit people... it seems only fair.
Magda, you are a funny woman and some may even find you likeable, nevertheless I suspect most women in your state would be more than glad to look at our chiselled glutes in lycra... perhaps it's the classic frustration of being able to see something but not touch? I had it too while looking at pictures of my bicycle while overseas... I understand.
I think a session on Kew Bvd and meeting Michael in person would prove adequate to reshape Magda's distorted views.
This is a classic case of bear shaving -> http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2009/08... (listen to Seth, he is a genius).
Advocating separating times for the road is not a meaningful or useful response to cases of
a) breaking the law (motorists and cyclists alike)
b) flagrant careless acts.
(I live on Beach Rd and I actually think it should be local only, ALL the time - turn it into a destination. Roundabouts, speed humps (cyclist friendly of course) - would stop all the summer rice rocket hoons racing Beach Rd and make it beautiful but best wait until I OWN property on Beach Rd ;) ).
Here's a simple step forward.
Riders - stop running reds. Nothing sh!ts me more as a cyclist, or motorist. You're setting a VERY bad example. This simple gesture is effective and genuine. Gives whinging motorists one less thing to whinge about as they sit at a red, idling, single occupant, angry at life, at the other single occupant car traffic (oh! the irony).
And as much fun as the NRR (and its ilk) is, running deep reds is poor form coz it's NOT a race.
I mean it's like rice rocket boy racers in souped up Lancers smashing pedestrians and into light poles. Pov.
The more of us getting out there, the more indiscretions become visible.
One cyclist's indiscretion is the equivalent of 50 in the eye of a motorist, comedian or bureaucrat.
From a safety stand point we should all start thinking about mounting cameras on our bikes, I'm sourcing now for summer (protection/insurance) fun.
Just the thought of pink and white lycra bums bouncing up and down in front of me - blech!
I didn't think Julia was funny with the door comment though - but how stupid are all you lycra bloggy people attributing the comment to Magda - and the atrocious spelling throughout this blog - does lycra rot your little brains
Stop riding across pedestrian crossings
Stop riding in the park
Stop doing that ridiculous balancing thing at traffic lights - everyone thinks you're a twit
I don't know how many times this sort of trash about rego plates on bikes, road rule transgression and the inconvenience cyclists pose to motorist just keeps on going around the mill.
How about chucking that in the bin Magda? Or maybe you're spending too much time playing with your i-phone in public.
If this misplaced attempt at humour is taken up by anyone driving a vehicle as permission to use their vehicle as a 2 tonne weapon against an unsuspecting, legal road using cyclist, then Magda has a case to answer for inciting violence. I sincerely hope this never happens.
Oh, and Magda: pssssst, if you want respect you've got to earn it
But here in Oz, there's already too much argy-bargy on the roads, so Magda is not inciting the unimaginable. She's ended up encouraging the violent that their behaviour is OK. Even that they can ramp it up.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/green-liv...
This isn't a cyclists/motorists problem. It's a people problem. And always will be.
IF -
1 Cyclists stopped breaking laws
2 Motorists stopped breaking laws
3 Motorists and humans weren't so selfish
4 Motorists had to commute every now and then to understand risks
5 People took personal responsibility
then we'd all be better off, much happier and respect each other
Problem is 1-5 ain't gonna happen because it's easier as a motorist to b!tch and moan about 'those bloody lycra loons' and just be miserable dangerous gits, and for cyclists to run lights and ride like crazy (yes, we do do it, admit it) than to Get Can Do.
Good on Magda for trying to lose weight - pity her mouth goes running off - she should spend her energy smashing weights and riding bikes. She should be an ambassador not a ...
Looking fwd to dropping an email to Jenny Craig now.
Am I allowed to make fat jokes? I'm a reformed fatty so I think I might be able to? Someone please advise.
tim
This reminds me of that pitch that was on the Gruen transfer (never aired) showing that even fat jokes aren't funny (which I disagree with, and only coz I am a reformed fatty).
Gruen: http://mumbrella.com.au/the-banned-gruen-transf...
[Sorry Wade if I am flaming - feel free to delete my comments - I've been hit twice - both seriously requiring hospitalisation - by cars on Beach Rd so I am VERY sensitive to this].
The behaviour of bunches is governed by the various state Road Acts.
Current residents Bayside and Kingston running a very ill informed anti stopping zone (which I agree is probably poor policy for residents) and also nasty anti cyclist propagandha effort via Murray Thompson state MLC for Sandy sending out horrible, horrible letters.
When I have the time I'll be writing back.
I'm glad the Herald Sun is to busy with Brendan Fevola to strart running "Lycra Hoons Attack our Magda"
*no offense to anyone involved in the campaign, my professional and personal opinions on that project are not one and the same
However, I draw the line at comments that incites violence, even if thinly veiled in humour. Jokes about bombs in suitcases are not welcomed around airports and as far as I am concerned jokes about 'dooring' etc are equally poor taste. Dare I say it bordering on terrorism.
In relation to Madga's comment's I think we ALL again need to find the humour in them, this political correctness volley we play is past its used by date. No right minded person would think she or her counterpart where advocating running people off the road, it was a joke!!
Please; everyone; PULL OUR HEADS IN!!
That's the whole _point_! It's not the right minded people I'm worried about! Don't you get it? This sort of hate speech is a dog whistle to the sorts of people who view cyclists as sub-human, and do not consider our lives worthy. The people who deliberately pass you too closely, who throw objects at you - these are the weak minded cretins who see these "jokes" as reinforcement to their whacked out views. After all, it was said by someone on the TV, it must be alright.
As for the lycra/shoes jokes, I don't care about those. Actually, it's pretty pathetic that so called professional comedians can't come up with something beyond the very very tired and recycled jokes about cycling sports gear.
Channel 10 sponsor Amy's Ride but let this go to air?
The Herald-Sun, long time sponsors of bike racing, continually run anti cycling articles.
I guess these morons don't realise the damage, on the ground, that they're doing.

they then proceeded to the next intersection, turned around and drove back towards me. honestly i was shit scared the were going to throw another thing at me so i didn't really get to eyeball the number plate. just wondering if they had been watching GNW.
Kyle Sanderlands attacked a single individual (ok, he's done so on more than one occasion) and he gets taken off air and faces the "death" of his radio career? And he was PAID to be a shock jock (ie, its his job to stir ppl up)!
The very least Madga and Julie can do is publicly apologise for their comments. If we are lucky Madga's god awful TV show will be yanked! :(
Change has to start somewhere, vote with our fingers - dont watch the show, dont support the newspaper. If we condone the behaviour (lack of values, morals etc) then it will continue. Unfortunately watching a show in the future supports that behaviour.
James
"Dear Paul,
Thank you for your email.
In response to your comments re Magda's appearance on Good News Week, Jenny Craig understands that Magda’s recent remarks have caused frustration and anger but we would like to assure you, we do not have any control over any public remarks, whether said in jest or not, that take part outside of our advertising.
We would also like to reassure you that we don’t agree with violence or derogatory remarks against anybody and have passed on your feedback to Magda’s management.
Jenny Craig Customer Care"
I received an email regarding why my comment was taken down and according to the email, the comments are going to be forwarded to Magda's management.
I have just replied to the email (to Jenny Craig) asking that my email also be forwarded to Magda's management as I have offered to go on a bicycle ride with Magda (ala- the ride with Wendy), supplying her with a bike to ride, helmet, etc. I'm not out to prove how slow or unfit she is, but to show her how much fun cycling is and to show and talk to her about how dangerous her words were. Beach Rd on a Sat morning would be my preferred ride with Magda. If I can finish off with a coffee stop where she get's to meet Michael Forbes then all the better.
Fingers crossed something comes of this. But I'm not holding my breath...
I missed ProCaf post. Same response for me.
it's not Magda's fault there was a 2 for 1 doughnut special at Krispy Kreme's on the morning before the show. The Monday North Road Ride is a recovery one after all, the bunch would have been going a bit slower than usual.
Sorry Magda, pity the special wasn't on a Tues or Thurs. Those are the faster days.
Maybe Krispy Kremes to home deliver. Problem solved for everyone!
Like it or not we as cyclists are held to a higher standard of account in our road behaviour. It doesn’t matter whether we think this is fair/unfair/right/wrong/black or white, it simply IS.
A motorist can see you do anything wrong and tell the world about it, probably the person he is talking to on his mobile phone as he drives, and the cyclist will be the villain.
As such we simply need to accept this is the case and deal with it. If we are being required to live by a higher standard of road rules then let us do it, if we have to be pillars of road rule righteousness then let’s do it. Only that way can we slowly, slowly change to world...certainly by giving any reason for antagonism we won’t achieve any meaningful progress.
In the mean time we can also start to exert such pressure as we can on such issues as development of better road practices on Beach Rd. etc.
But next time you consider or are about to undertake any behaviour a motorist could get angry about realise you are hurting all cyclists as your fuel their contempt...
*Recent uni research shows these guys are the typical light runner, not the lycra clad regular.
Attacking these two ladies about their weight is a waste of time and just help prove the misnomer that cyclists are collectively loud mouthed aggressive lairs.
We should collectively point out how much good cycling does for the community for example: Around the bay in a Day raises how much money for charity?
Amy's Ride how much money does that raise for the community?
We as group should hold our heads high because by the very nature of our chosen sport we also contribute to on going health of our planet.
Do Magda and Julia contribute anything as significant to the community as we do? Well certainly not through their poor attempts at humor attacking a soft target like the cycling community, ha ha be original ladies and maybe we will pay attention.
We need to get over ourselves a little bit and see it for what it was tasteless and baseless and move on.
If we need to get on a soap box get on it for the right reasons and all the positives that cyclists bring to the community like the up coming Kilometers for Kids ride in NSW to support the John Mclean Foundation.
Travis
Wendy and Magda, get them out there and skinny them up and make them realise what it's all about.
Really and truly, "sick of cyclists riding to get fit."
I'm dripping in irony. Dripping!
I would just like to send you a message noting my disgust at Magda Szubanski's anti cyclist comment made on God News Week, 28th September 2009.
With an ever increasing population in Australia, increased environmental awareness (of which Magda herself is an ambassador) and an increasing number of cyclists using the road for commuting, recreation, training and fitness, it would be a good time for someone in Magda's position to point out that what she was saying in fact totally in jest. Sadly there are people out there who would see this kind of act (swerving or dooring a cyclist) as comical, and it does happen all to often.
Rather than apologising for what was said it would be a great opportunity for Magda to point out the benefits of regular cycling, and the need for both parties (cyclists and motorists) to follow the road rules and share the road as it is stated by law.
I think we can all agree that there are too many deaths and injuries on our roads, including motorists, cyclist, motorbikers and pedestrians. To in any way trivialise this, be it under the banner of humour or not, is an irresponsible act by anyone seen as a role model.
I believe that as one of her corporate partners, you as a company are in a position to strongly encourage and support Magda to make a formal retraction of her comments and purport the benefits that cycling can have in contributing to the healthy lifestyle that your company profits from.
Kind regards,
Conor

How about just getting on the bike and going for a frickin' ride instead?
If I can do anything to increase driver awareness and my safety on the road I'm gunna do it. Though you're probably way to rad to do the same.
Conor
This goes for a situation like Magda's all the way down to commenters getting personal with each other.
Lets put it more bluntly and say its all very well voicing your opinion and angst but stooping to personel attacks and not viewing it from both sides makes you views redundant.
Please lets keep our comments above the rubbish.
http://forums.ten.com.au/forums/thread.jspa?thr...
Seriously now, we can do better than cheap shots and weight-related jokes to argue our case.
Take a look at some of Bernardo Bellotto's city paintings from the late 1700's:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9...
Since WWII the advancement of the car saw these public spaces turned into roads for moving vehicles around. In the USA they even stopped building footpaths! Like Magda said, if you get out of your house to do some exercise, or any other reason, you inevitably end up on a 4 lane highway full of 2 tonne vehicles that are mostly moving just one occupant around. Sorry Magda, but it's me who is sick of being forced to get out of the way each time I am out enjoying the outdoors. What's wrong with all the other lanes? Too much effort to overtake safely? Late for your favorite TV show? Maybe should have started your journey a few minutes earlier?
Most European cities are starting to phase cars out; congestion fees, improving public transport, reducing lanes and increasing walk-ways and bike lanes.
I still own a car, its still the best way to see this country and get away on the weekend. I just think if everyone reduced their car use by half (or more) through utilising public transport, bikes and even their feet, this would be a much better place to live.
Just remember, we, cyclists, are the future.
be very careful how you say things to the paper and tv reporters.
from previous experience they will cut and misquote your comments if they want to.
you may be very PRO something and they can make you look very NEGATIVE.
anyway time will tell ... when we read in The Age "professional cyclist and part time movie maker , WW said "blah blah blah".
cheers
Peter
You're right, time will tell...
Unfortunately she probably isn't alone - who among us doesn't know some person that likes to bash cyclists (verbally i hope :0), we're easy targets?
I've been regularly cycling for about 18 months now on a roadie, and have had my share of horn-blasts, close calls, and one fall where a lady in a 4WD decided her car had more right to the BIKE LANE than I did. So, like most of us, I get this feeling that "motorists" are, in general, stupid and dangerous.
However, most of the people that I know in everyday life are pretty good people, and would never think to intentionally hurt someone. But most of these people are motorists. How do you reconcile these facts?
I truly believe that the majority of people (read drivers) genuinely think that we are not legally allowed on the road, and they are doing us a favour just by letting us be there.
Our perspective is that roads are public space, and we put them to their best use, travelling in an environmentally-friendly way, staying fit and active, getting involved in life. Drivers' perspectives are that roads are for cars, so get out of the way. It's pretty clear this is what Magda thinks from her comments. I mean, she even got upset about riders who stop at lights, but balance on the pedals! That will take me years to perfect...
I think Magda knew quite soon after she started her rant that what she was saying was stupid, but I'm glad to see she is being held to account. Unfortunately, she won't be the last person to slag off cyclists, and I doubt CT has time to take them all for Friday morning rides...
By the way, I normally commute in "civilian" shorts, but Magda's comments inspired me to don the full road kit for my ride Tuesday morning...
It was a joke and they have a fair point. You take up four lanes to ride around on main freeways so cn you see why this frustrate drivers. It is about time someone on national TV told you cyclists where you belong!!!!!!!!!!!
Someone told a certain celebrity on radio where he thinks she and people like her belong, as a joke, it was inappropriate, highly offensive to many and he was given a suspension from radio, and hung by the media. How is Magda & Julias "joke" any less offensive?
How about someone tells people that they have no right to public health services if they don't lead a healthy life, and take their health for granted. How about we tell fat people, anorexics, smokers, drinkers etc. that they do not belong in hospitals as their illnesses are self induced? We wouldn't do that, it's not fair, so don't try and tell us where cyclists belong, when the road rules clearly state that we have every right to the road. If you and many other motorists would give us some respect, we'd probably move further over to the left and let you pass all the time, but we sometimes don't, as we can't trust you to pass us safely.
I have never seen a cyclist, or a group of cyclists taking up FOUR LANES on any road, let alone one lane on a freeway, so stop making up rubbish.
I am so sorry you have the mindless mentality of a sheep and need to follow.
For starters most cyclists ride two fast for a bike path, I for one have been told by Police I am riding too fast for the designated bike path. He asked me to ride on the road for the safety of the bike path users. Please tell me where I should ride.
On the issue of saftey, a bike path lane is at best one bike wide, can you image the carnage which will happen when a bunch of 50 plus riders travelling at 35km/h come upon a cycist travelling slower or much worse in the other direction?
I am also sure we don't ride on Freeways, when was the last time you saw a bunch of riders on the West gate which was not part of an organised fund raising ride or a race?
So Natalie there is only one person who needs to get over it and that is YOU!!!!
Exclamation marks & shouting via caps lock prove nothing when arguing your point to a large group of annoyed people. Even if you don't agree with a different point of view, it's rather obvious that these remarks made on Monday night have hit a very raw nerve. Can you at the very least comprehend that?
This isn't just some cheap accusation. I've had rocks thrown at me, eggs, once a half-full 2-litre bottle of soft drink. The very day of Magda's rant, in fact, I got hit by some P-plate idiot (it usually is) throwing something, and I still have the bruise. There is a climate of hatred toward cyclists in this country that I'm quite certain has killed many people, and severely injured others. By injecting a further dose of popular contempt into the equation, Magda is increasing the odds that someone, somewhere out there on the roads, will do something stupid, and someone else will die. No amount of frustration on the part of any road user makes that the right thing to do.
Oh, sorry Nathalie - double post.
Magda's rant was not funny. If anything it was ironic as she is trying to lose weight whilst condemning cyclists who ride "for exercise."
Anyway, as with Wendy, there is as much jealousy as there is resentment in her commentary. Julia is no better, another 'comedian' who has had a long tern struggle with weight. Wendy, Julia, Magda - common thread?
Julia's comments might have been worse - but I think people are more offended by Magda, as some people saw her as an ambassador and inspiration for weight loss & healthy living, as well as environmentally conscious living - as an ambassador for Enviroweek.
Where as with Julia, she's just a terrible comedian.
But seriously, BV play the game fairly well, they've got Brumby to wack a fair bit of coin at cycling, despite having a very very pro road (anti bike/PT) lobby in this country.
Having said that, Wade plays this magnificently, and I certainly would support any group/effort he started via one of my companies.
I can even see a tux.
"Itsh Wallash, Wade Wallash".
"Moneypenny? Mishilles, engage."

It's not just an Australian problem either, check these links out ...

Some lady plowed into a massive group of cyclists on Tamaki Drive in Auckland ( a road around the harbour in some ways similar to beach road) One critical in intensive care and absolute carnage.
"The following is a statement from Magda Szubanski:
"I am so sorry that the skit on bikers has caused offence. There are so many safety issues surrounding cyclists. Certainly motorists need to become much more aware and considerate of cyclists on the road. My belief is that responsible cycling is to use bike paths where possible and if it's not possible, to be extra careful on the roads.
We all make mistakes and the point is that hopefully we learn from them. Clearly my joke was stupid and insensitive but perhaps it has brought to light that there are frustrations amongst cyclists and motorists. Hopefully some good will come of this and it will help promote useful dialogue between the two groups where some of these frustrations can be worked through in a productive way.
I am a bike rider from way back and in fact have been planning to buy a new bike. As a gesture of solidarity I have offered to participate in the National Ride to Work Day on 14th October. Apologies again. And, yes, I will be wearing lycra." ends Magda Szubanski"
To Benjoman, other Ten workers and Magda (if she actually looks at this)
Whilst I appreciate the comments that have been made, the apology from Magda and her offering to ride to work on the national ride to work day, I simply dont buy it.
I dont buy it for the following reasons:
1. Ten chose to air, after screening, approving and editing the material, knowing that this would cause inflamation in the community and strengthen the divide between people who share the road, an already sensitive issue with many injured each year. This is the implication of the skit, no ifs or buts, no comedy, no skit excuses etc.
2. It is my opinion that the GNW producers, Paul and Ten chose to do this for the sensational and polarising reactions it would receive thus boosting ratings at the obvious potential expense of the harm of others
3. The above group also chose to do this knowing that they cannot be responsible for peoples actions who they cannot control but can significantly infulence; especially those who may not be able to fully interpret the jovial nature of the skit, even if it is considered a comedy.
The above are my opinions of the situation, there may be other elements and some of the above could be challenged by Ten. I think that in the spirit of remediation and true apology it would be appropriate for the Ten Network to do one (or more) of the following:
1. Donate Prime Time advertising slots ($$) to road safety awareness
2. Have a segment on another, more appropriate high rating show that can have a positive impact on the community
3. Financially support (through advertising $$) cycling campaigns such as the Amy Gillet foundation and others that aim to reduce cycling accidents and road awareness.
I suggest that the Ten Network, focused primarily on the executives including Grant Blackley, consider the above with a view to act; to also seriously consider if they think that this is a good reflection of their brand in the marketplace. You should reflect on a way in which the Ten Network could make a positive impact on the community.
Regards,
James
"My belief is that responsible cycling is to use bike paths where possible and if it’s not possible, to be extra careful on the roads."
Basically contempt for any of cyclists that dare to use roads when in her mind it's obvious we should not be on the road. I doubt she even knows cyclist have a legal right to travel two abreast on the road.
I will concede it's not all one way traffic though. Rides like hell ride, and even some of that footage of the NRR don't do us any favours. It's up to us to stamp that rubbish out and leave the racing for the race course.
See what she's doing for Enviroweek^
http://www.bicyclinglife.com/EffectiveAdvocacy/...
It only takes one nutter to see the entire audience cheering at the idea of taking out cyclists with their door for this sort of crap to go horribly wrong. If you do actually ride as much as you say, you have somehow not encountered these people?
There's a reason why it's illegal to incite violence (even as a "joke") against many marginalized groups in our community. It's because bigoted wingnuts see it as a license to act our their bigoted fantasies. However for some reason, our particular minority is somehow fair game? I hope you, or someone you love isn't on the receiving end of one of these cretins with a license and a 4WD!
Yes- this is below the belt and yes this type of humor is a bit off- but the lack of respect and hate towards cyclists goes far deeper than a comedy sketch downunder......much deeper.
So she has apologized? The media will pickup on it soon and it will pass. But sadly, the haters will still be there. I feel sorry for Australia's lack of culture and acceptance of anything other than the car.
I'm much happier now in New Zealand ;)
The honerable Mr Wallace came across very smooth- He'll likely be at the SKCC crtis this Sunday taking autographs :-)
I think this just proves that ignorance is a bigger problem for us cyclists that mallace (in most cases). We need to take Wade's good lead and encourage open dialogue and education. Maybe if Magda truly is sorry we could try and plant her with some facts for her ride to work day. As some pro cycling messages will always be better reveived by non cyclists if they are said by non cyclists..
And if that doesn't work- lets follow Robbie McEwans advice :-)
a) we're not legally entitled to the road
b) bike paths are safe (hmmm not for my 40km/h commute)
c) we don't pay road tax (I know I pay tax through my petrol use)
Are worrying and well entrenched in non-cycling drivers.
I know groups like AGF etc aim to cut through and realign perceptions, but to my mind, they're critically failing.
What is needed is a sh!tload of cash and a VERY SMART marketing campaign (Seth Godinesque logo, website etc) where the facts are made clear to drivers via print media, TV etc.
The govt should help fund it. I'd put money in.
The name should be assertive but not passive aggressive.
Personal stories of road carnage where cyclists end up hurt would cut through.
Much like TACs ads.
cheers,
Tim Marsh
Lets start a Guerilla Campaign!!!! Be a bit of fun, what do you think?
Twoeee
While I trust that my fiance does the right thing while riding (most of the time :P) I am still petrified of receiving a phone call from the police or the hospital saying he's been injured while riding.
The issue with Magda's comments is that she doesn't take into account that these cyclists are people, who have people at home who love them and want to see them come home every night safely. It's no different for the people who drive to work or use public transport - their families expect that they will come home safely...
If you all want to be so super safe and never get injured- take up knitting.
Look at how our wonderful fellow Australians laughed and abused riders who were taking out by that idiot who deliberately braked and took down the bunch. Charming that you take their side. Do you really ride a bike on the road?
Next time you're walking on a footpatch with say, you 4 year old daughter, and someone tosses a rock/bottle at you, or, as you're crossing a pedestrian crossing, runs straight over you, you'll be sweet-as with that buddy?
Nah, didn't think so hey.
Fark.

You all need to just accept that Australian culture is to hate all things bikes- where the car rules. It won't ever change either and you can complain all you like and blame all you like and even go nuts and over react at every possible person who dares to make anti bike comments....it won't change.
So yeah, blame me, TV personalities, your colleagues, neighbors and the media- but the fact is that it is the way it is and that's that. It was like it BEFORE this show and it will be like it AFTER.
Stop your whinging.
After living in Australia for 8 yrs and trying to accept how f#$%ed up your bike culture is....i was glad to see the back of it.
But if you think attacking a porky redneck celeb will fix it all up- well go ahead.
We simply don't give up because it's a bit hard. I find this is a useful strategy in other aspects of life. You should try it.
I've been on the net a while, sport. I still telnet to port 25 and send email like a real man.
Phew, here I was thinking I was going to have to watch my back.
Rad times. Where are you now? I'll be sure to avoid.

Using your iPhone to capture WYMTM will take on a whole new meaning..
I'm hoping the apology is for her intention to wear lycra!
I am sick of whinge, whinge, whinge about cyclists
I am sick of bigoted revheads.
I am sick of hearing cars killing people.
Motorists are a sick lot of bloody whinging losers.
With so much stacked against you, it's time to piss off and find some other form of transport!
I'm pissed off that we are building bike lanes e.g. Fitzroy Street, thus removing needed parking spaces so that cyclists can ignore it and ride on the road anyway.
Beware guys.. theres a lot of people like me out there and your behavior is creating more and more...
